Web 2.0 and bandwagon design >.<

Web 2.0 and bandwagon design.

I get it, I really do... Its just that I hate it.

Anytime creativity has a price put on its head and designers are pressured into a "fashionable" because someone defined it as "NEW!" and whats "in" or "c00l" or whatever (I ran out of quotes) I want to bleed from my eyes, throw my computer out the window and focus my creative career on painting with mud on cave walls. At least in my cave there wont be some monstrous corpulent corporate entity thats so large it cant see where its going wont have the power to influence and subjugate those ache to do something different.

I get that web 2.0 is supposed to be all about some new magic software that makes the web more seamless, interactive, and aversive... but its not. Its just a bunch of old dogs that have been there wanting to play all along except someone has tied them together and painted them with fluorescent stripes and said HERE, I have brought you a eight legged zebradog from mars and it cures cancer!

The masses look and say hey wow... that seems familiar... like something I used to like... but I've never had a zebradog from mars! I'll take it! Soon everyone is trying to keep up and the poor dogs cant run so well with half their legs in the air and all tied together but people need something new. Even if its not.

O.k. I get it. Vista with its triple glazed "glasstic" (I just made it up TM!) look has all the hallmarks of something new, I mean look, its glossy! Right? Reflective! Yea! That means its clean like a new car or a clean window, just be careful you dont walk right into it. The interface can get in the way when its compromised.

Art and creativity are ripe for compromise and even corruption. They are by definition what people perceive them to be and will be judged as such. So when you are creating, writing, cooking, doing anything that involves part of you in the process... every once in a while... dont draw from what is fed to you, look away from the neon and the commercials, look within and pull out something that is uniquely you. Its a great way to grow.

The Art of life with the internet...

The art of life with the internet.

My tech exploration is of something that may seem so obvious as to be done to death. However I really dont think people are aware of the unique moment in time that we have the privilege of experiencing. Never in all of human history has so much information been so available to so many people, not even close. Information and knowledge have found a radical catapult in the seemingly infinite web of computers and people. This shift in the control and flow of facts and fiction has stripped many of those who once used information for their malevolent gain.

With this unique freedom comes the responsibility to defend its uncontrolled and uncensored use with zealous and religious fury because I know that this interconnecting of human beings will be the most significant milestone in our evolution since we noticed our oposable thumbs.

We have not even begun to feel the effects of what happens when we are all able to learn any skill, research any location, any action, learn any history, find any cure, and solve any problem with a simple question to a virtual library of knowledge that eclipses anything we can currently comprehend. Scientists will solve all problems faster, artists will find inspiration and technique at will, and humanity will swell with empathy, unity, and enlightenment.

Its all about the whole being greater then the sum of its parts but NOW those parts can finally become one on a global scale. With each individual carrying unique insight to the world as a lone and isolated puzzle piece we now have a path into the future that offers us a way out and a way in at the same time.

Of personal interest to me as an artist will be the ability to present my creative concepts without the filters and shackles of reality.

Watch for it, the next giant leap will be the direct connection the the brain, bypassing the warm but heavy flesh. Once the electric pulses that currently pump information across the world on cold hard steel and plastic can be interacted with directly by the electrical impulses that carry our thoughts and feelings the full potential and our future will be realized.

See you then,
-Peter Ochabski

Hey 2advanced.com, work with ArtScientific! It'll be enlightening.

2advanced.

They are simply cutting edge, blazing a glowing path into the future of flash and interactive websites.

They consistently use innovative and "tech" design themes while always incorporating some element of humanity so as not to produce a cold and/or sterile design that is often
associated with such themes. For example their current homepage has a different color scheme and panoramic image of a distant city, yet in the foreground there is always a person incorporated into the design looking off towards the distant city.

http://www.rappcollins.com/
They also temper their designs with humor and emotion. There are often comical details and "easter eggs" hidden within their designs. Hummingbirds that react to your cursor, or "what we look like with our shirts untucked" candid photo galleries.

http://v3.2a-archive.com/flashindex.htm
A previous site they designed for themselves was named the most influential site of the decade by Adobe and set in motion a tidal wave of techo-wanna-be flash websites that still make up a disproportionate share of flash sites.

Their works takes full advantage of perceived depth and dimension with many interactive and menu items using perspective, transparency and shadow to create depth and immersion.

http://store.diesel.com/home.asp?stl=1&tskay=3FD17CD7
They create complete dimensions for their sites to exist in, for example their work on the Diesel site where they have a underwater environment with models floating in water, even the cursor moves as though through fluid and becomes murky when near clickable items.

A reliable source tells me that their founder Eric Jordan started the company and was creating some really cutting edge flash which attracted some very large clients and with them very large paychecks and explosive growth.

import Flash video

import flash video...

only use embed video if it is a short clip (under 30 sec.)
otherwise, use progresssive or stream
if you have 1000s of viewers simultaneously, dont use progressive.

Video encoding
keyframe intervals makes sure that it gets coded at a particular interval
keep it at about 24-30 frames

crop & resize
320 x 240 is a good size to show video (in a smallish window)
 at a 4:3 ratio

crop
20 px on the top and bottom
15px on each side to keep ratio 4:3
or 50 off top
30 off bottom
40 on one side
20 on the other
total = 80 topand bottom, 60 off sides

you can put your own skins in for the controls
auto hide will hide them until you roll over them
just put autoHide to true

Custom script in the video.

video object> youhave to name it>bring in script
myvideo reference the video object then you have to make sure you reference tohe correct .fav

the advantage is that the components add file size
so if you custom script you will save some size

you can also custom script your own bottn controlers.

Flash Interface 101

standoutawards.com
scifi.com/tinman/oz
citycenter.com
icebreakers.la

lipsum.org

be careful of making the interface 100% of screen...it will scale down, but scaling up may distort the rasterized images*** see below

Font choice- Technic
make text into a movie clip so that you can add layer effects- drop shadow, glow, etc

change the text on a layer above the color of the button in the button menu (double click the button then edit the button)

hold alt to make duplicate buttons on the scene, then duplicate them in the library and change ea button's text independently

now you can select ea button on the stage and swapped them out for the duplicate buttons on the stage by clicking swap down in properties

ccreate new layer called load area on main stage

if you make the load are 300 x 300 then turn it into a movie clip and change the size to 250x250, it will scale down the content to fit the new load area (remember the content was already 300x300)

say you make another load area next to it at 450x250 for the text

make a new document at 450x250 and paste in the text you want. you can adjust the line spacing/ leading by clicking the p (paragragh) symbol in properties panel save this and publish it out.

Now load this text movie into the content box.

In order to target it, you have to give it an instance name in properties. Name it loadbox since it is not specific to the content rather just to the instance.

now call it

on(release) {
 loadbox.loadMovie("what.swf");
}

they will load at the registration point referenced by the cross-haired circle

now you can switch out the content
paste the new text into the original new text document and resave it with a new name (where.fla)and test that out(to get a .swf published)

now make a new layer and add action to that layer same as the first but now change the new swf name

on(release) {
 loadbox.loadMovie("where.swf");
}

again, the movies will take on the bg color of the root movie. if you want it a diff color than the bg of the main movie, add a coloerd box to the bottom layer of the movie you are calling in.

loading images

make sure all of the elements that are dynamically loading in the same root folder as the flash movie itself

you dont have to import them into the library because they are rather large and the loading box is actually scaled down so it will also scale down any content

***is is one way to compensate for the scaling in a larger browser window...

name the movie clip loader box for the photos photobox in the properties menu
now add

photobox.loadMovie("photo1.jpg")

to the actions for one of the navigation buttons so theat it now reads

on(release) {
 loadbox.loadMovie("where.swf");
 photobox.loadMovie("photo1.jpg");
}

you can mask the edges of the photobox to round the corners by adding a mask layer above the layer on the scene in the shape you want

in ordre to make the load area just a reference rather than visible, you go into the photobox movie clip(double click it) and turn it into a guide

Cross

Cross pattée

A cross pattee (pattée, patty) has arms narrowing towards the centre, but with non-indented ends. See also Iron Cross.

This cross is often associated with Crusaders or the Crusades. The heraldic cross pattée was sometimes used by a Crusader order, the Teutonic Knights (though their more usual emblem was a plain straight black cross on white)[citation needed], and later became associated with Prussia and the 1871-1918 German empire. It continued to be used by the German military after 1918. A version of the Iron Cross is used to date by the German army (Bundeswehr) as its symbol and nationality marking and found on vehicles, aircraft and publications.

The cross pattée is also sometimes associated with another Crusader order, the Knights Templar, though as with the Teutonic Knights, it was not used consistently. The Templars did adopt a red cross on their white robes in 1147,[1] but there was no specific style designated, and different Templars used different versions of cross -- the pattée was by no means their official symbol. Some modern Freemason organizations however do use the pattée in an official way, and this use occasionally causes confusion as to which version was used by the medieval order of Knights Templar.

The cross pattée is also placed before the name of the bishop who issues a Catholic imprimatur, is occasionally found as a map symbol indicating the location of a Christian site, and is the logo of the "Independent" skate clothing line (in the "alisee" form, with the ends of the arms in the shape of arcs of an enclosing circle). It is also associated with the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

The character "X" is rendered as a cross pattee in the Microsoft Wingdings font.

What Is It?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Where Is It From?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance.

Why Use It?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Creativity; the most frequently cursed blessing?

At its best Creativity is a boundless and endless source of creation, liberation, love and communication. It is capable of inspiring the hopeless and abolishing ignorance.

At its worst, Creativity is by its very nature a inconsistent deviation that leads to frustration, self doubt, animosity, confusion, and emotional pain.  It can frighten the intelligent and anger the stupid.

    Poodles are ridiculous...

    cinnamon[1].jpg

    But this thing (teacup poodle) is so damn cute its going to implode. Reality will be unable to support its existance and cuteness critical mass will make it collapse in on itself forming a backhole of cuteness that will suck everything into it... ending life as we know it. Worth it? I havent decided yet.
